Flu Season is Here!

Flu season is upon us!

This flu season is exciting for many pharmacies as it marks the first year that pharmacists are able to administer the flu vaccine. At Brunskill Pharmacy, we have had excellent uptake of this service and very positive feedback!

Each year - new, slightly different strains (different versions) of influenza appear. The flu shot is re-formulated each year with a prediction of which strains will be circulating this flu season. It’s important to get vaccinated annually to ensure that you are protected from the new strains of influenza that are expected each year.

After you get the flu shot, it takes about 2 weeks for your body to develop antibodies against the influenza strains. Antibodies help prime your system for a potential attack, so that if you were to come in contact with certain strains of influenza – your immune system will know how to protect you!

One of the most common misconceptions about the flu shot is that there is a risk of getting the flu from the vaccine itself. This is incorrect, and may be a reason why many individuals avoid getting the flu shot year after year. You cannot get influenza from the flu shot as the vaccine administered does not contain any live viruses. The most common side effect from the flu shot is soreness/tenderness at the injection site, which generally subsides within a few days.

The best way to protect yourself and others is by getting the flu shot! The vaccine works best when a high percentage of the population is vaccinated. It’s quick, easy and convenient to book your flu shot with our pharmacy. Come in or give us a call at 306 653 2922 to book your appointment today!
